Chelsea produced the worst title defence of any club
in Premier League history in 2015-16, but who has been their silver
lining in a difficult campaign?
The Blues were only one point above the relegation zone on December 17, and they subsequently sacked Jose Mourinho, who paid for a terrible run of nine defeats in 16 matches.
They were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 on aggregate and Diego Costa's infamous red card saw them dumped out of the FA Cup to Everton in the quarter-final at Goodison Park. No silverware is in sight for the Stamford Bridge side, who finished the campaign with Guus Hiddink in charge.
Picking three names from their worst season in 20 years is no easy task but these are three men who can hold their heads up high in a dire year for the club as Antonio Conte prepares to take charge in the summer.
WILLIAN |
Willian has undoubtedly been Chelsea's most productive attacking player over the course of a difficult campaign. His free kicks helped Chelsea through a difficult period early in the season, including a vital effort against Dynamo Kiev that helped them through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Brazilian has established himself as a regular with his international side after contributing 10 goals and six assists for the Blues.
KURT ZOUMA |
The 21-year old centre-back is likely to take over as the defensive lynchpin from John Terry, who is set to leave the club in the summer. The Frenchman has proven this season that he can cement his starting spot amid competition from Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and his captain. In using Zouma over Cahill, Mourinho bucked his usual trend and gave a younger player the chance to develop in the first team - and it was a gamble that paid off.
Zouma's good form was halted in its tracks when he tore his cruciate ligament against Manchester United, surely ending any hopes of a Euro 2016 berth. His solid 31 appearances for Chelsea are enough to earn him a spot in the top three, however.
CESAR AZPILICUETA |
An ever present for Chelsea in a season in which they have suffered much defensive unrest, playing in either full-back role. He is affectionately known as 'Dave' by Chelsea fans and was awarded the club's Player's Player of the Year last season as he lifted his first Premier League title. And the Spain star has been just as good as any right-back in England's top flight this term.
He has managed to contribute two goals and two assists, and has been a dependable figure throughout this season.
