Mourinho and Wenger in another battle
Eternal rivals Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger are set to come for each other’s jugular again, this time in pursuit of Southampton defender Jose Fonte.
Wenger is desperate to land a central defender following injuries to Gabriel and Per Mertesacker, and have been linked with Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia and former United defender Jonny Evans from West Brom.
Mourinho, meanwhile, is looking to fortify his team with the capture of Fonte, which is expected to be his last bit of business this summer, following the captures of Henrikh Mhikitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Paul Pogba.
Mourinho is ready to offer Marcos Rojo to Southampton as part of their bid to prise captain Fonte away from the south coast.
Wenger on the other hand, has only been able to sign Granit Xhaka and little-knowns Takuma Asano and Rob Holding, and were beaten 4-3 by Liverpool in their first Premier League game of the season.
Mourinho wants the 32-year-old centre-half to add experience to his back-line and the Euro 2016 winner is keen on the move, despite being offered a new contract by the Saints which would make him their highest-paid player.
