Angry Wenger blames referee for City loss
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has taken a swipe at referee Martin Atkinson, accusing him of awarding Manchester City two offside goals after they lost 2-1 to Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Gunners surrendered a one goal lead as City came from behind to win 2-1 at the Etihad, and Wenger has blamed referee Atkinson for their woes, but does not expect the official to be held accountable – comparing referees to lions in the zoo.
“The decisions went against us,” said Wenger.
“The two goals are two offside goals which is very difficult to accept in a game of that stature.
“I feel enough is enough for us because we got some bad decisions for the whole season and today (Sunday) I looked at the goals – both are offside.
“But, as it is well known, the referees are protected very well like the lions in the zoo so we have to live with their decisions.
“I want them to be very well protected. I want them to be safe. But if they could make the right decisions it would be even better.
“I can understand City look very happy, I would be as well. But I think the goals were offside.
“We had a horrible week, absolutely horrible. What is worse, out of two good performances we get zero points and out of two leading positions, we lose two games.”
